Creating Custom Tournament Registrations - 17 Field Types Explained

The Registration Problem Nobody Talks About
Every tournament organizer has been here: 80 players register through a Google Form, but half of them didn't provide their phone number, a third wrote their name in all caps with no surname, and nobody mentioned they're allergic to adhesive tape until match day. Registration forms are the foundation of tournament operations, and weak foundations create chaos.
The solution isn't more follow-up messages. It's better forms - forms that capture exactly what you need, validate it on entry, and don't ask for anything unnecessary.
Why Custom Fields Beat Generic Forms
A standard registration form asks for name, email, and phone. A well-designed tournament registration asks for what the tournament actually needs:
- ●A cricket tournament needs playing role, batting hand, and bowling style
- ●A football tournament needs preferred position and boot size (if providing boots)
- ●A marathon needs emergency contact, blood group, and any medical conditions
- ●A school sports meet needs parent/guardian consent and age verification
Custom field types let organizers build forms that match their specific requirements. On Zplys, there are 17 distinct field types available - each designed for a different kind of data. Here's what they do and when to use them.
The 17 Field Types
Text-Based Fields
**1. Short Text**
Single-line text input. Use for: nicknames, team name preferences, referral codes.
Example: "What name should appear on your jersey?"
**2. Long Text**
Multi-line text area. Use for: medical conditions, special requirements, brief player bios.
Example: "Any medical conditions the organizer should be aware of?"
**3. Email**
Validated email input - won't accept invalid formats. Use for: secondary contact email, parent email for juniors.
Example: "Guardian's email address (for players under 18)"
**4. Phone**
Phone number input with format validation. Use for: emergency contact, alternate number, WhatsApp number.
Example: "Emergency contact number (someone not playing in the tournament)"
**5. URL**
Validated URL input. Use for: CricHeroes profile link, social media profile, portfolio.
Example: "Link to your CricHeroes profile (if available)"
Number and Date Fields
**6. Number**
Numeric input only. Use for: jersey number preference, years of experience, age.
Example: "Preferred jersey number (1-99)"
**7. Date**
Date picker. Use for: date of birth, availability start date, certification expiry.
Example: "Date of birth (for age category verification)"
**8. Time**
Time picker. Use for: preferred training slot, pickup time for travel arrangements.
Example: "Preferred practice session time"
Selection Fields
**9. Dropdown**
Single selection from a list. Use for: playing role, skill level, t-shirt size, dietary preference.
Example: "Primary playing role" with options: Batsman, Bowler, All-Rounder, Wicketkeeper.
**10. Multi-Select**
Multiple selections from a list. Use for: available match days, positions willing to play, languages spoken.
Example: "Which weekends are you available?" with options for each tournament weekend.
**11. Radio Buttons**
Single selection displayed as buttons. Use for: yes/no questions with more than two options, or small option sets where all choices should be visible.
Example: "Experience level" - Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced.
**12. Checkbox**
Single yes/no toggle. Use for: consent confirmations, policy acceptance, opt-in questions.
Example: "I confirm I will be available for all scheduled match days."
Rich Content Fields
**13. File Upload**
File attachment. Use for: ID proof, medical certificate, age proof, team logo.
Example: "Upload a photo of your school ID (for age verification)"
**14. Image Upload**
Image-specific upload with preview. Use for: player headshot, action photo, passport photo.
Example: "Upload a recent photo (will be used on your player card during auction)"
Special Fields
**15. Section Header**
Not an input - a visual divider that groups related fields. Use to organize long forms into logical sections: "Personal Details," "Playing Information," "Medical & Emergency."
**16. Terms & Conditions**
A special checkbox with expandable text content. The player must accept the terms to complete registration. Use for: tournament rules acceptance, code of conduct, liability waiver.
**17. Description/Info Block**
Display-only text block - no input required. Use to provide context or instructions between fields.
Example: "The following section is optional but helps us create balanced teams during the auction."
Building an Effective Registration Form
The Rule of 12
Registration forms with more than 12-15 input fields see a significant drop-off in completion rates. Every additional field you add costs you registrations. Before adding a field, ask: "Will I actually use this data, or am I collecting it just in case?"
Smart Ordering
Put easy fields first (name, phone, email), complex fields in the middle (role selection, availability), and sensitive fields last (medical info, consent). Players who've already invested 2 minutes filling in basic info are less likely to abandon the form at the medical section.
Required vs. Optional
Mark only essential fields as required. Name and phone? Required. Jersey size? Required if you're ordering jerseys. Preferred batting position? Optional - nice to have, but don't block registration over it.
Help Text
Use help text to clarify ambiguous fields. "Phone Number" is clear. "Emergency Contact" needs help text: "Please provide a number for someone who will NOT be at the tournament." Good help text reduces support messages.
