Setting Up OBS Studio

OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) is the industry standard for live streaming, and it's completely free. Here's how to set it up for a sports event:

Step 1: Install and Configure

Download OBS from obsproject.com
Run the auto-configuration wizard - select "Optimize for streaming"
Set output resolution to 1280x720 (720p) - this is the sweet spot between quality and bandwidth
Set frame rate to 30fps (60fps is unnecessary for most sports and doubles your bandwidth need)
Set bitrate to 2500-4000 kbps (depends on your upload speed)

Step 2: Add Your Camera Source

In OBS, click "+" under Sources
Select "Video Capture Device" for a webcam, or "Window Capture" / "Browser Source" for phone-as-camera apps
Position and resize the camera feed to fill the canvas

Step 3: Add Overlays

This is where your stream goes from "phone pointed at a field" to "broadcast." Overlays add scorecards, team logos, player information, and branding on top of your camera feed.

The Commentary Setup

A stream without commentary feels empty. You don't need a professional commentator - you need someone who knows the game and can talk naturally.

Audio Tips

●Use a dedicated microphone, not the laptop's built-in mic (which picks up fan noise and keyboard clicks)
●A Rs 500 clip-on lavalier mic plugged into the laptop's 3.5mm jack is a massive upgrade
●Keep the commentator 2-3 feet from the mic to avoid plosive sounds

Internet - The Make or Break Factor

The single biggest cause of stream failures isn't equipment - it's internet. A beautiful multi-camera setup is worthless if the stream buffers every 30 seconds.

Internet Checklist

●Test upload speed at the venue 2-3 days before the event (use speedtest.net)
●You need minimum 5 Mbps upload for 720p30. Aim for 10+ Mbps for reliability
●If venue WiFi is unreliable, use a 4G/5G hotspot as primary or backup
●Jio and Airtel both offer data plans with 40-50 Mbps upload in most metro areas

Bandwidth Math

At 3000 kbps bitrate for 3 hours of streaming: that's approximately 4 GB of data. A standard 2 GB/day plan won't cut it for a full day of matches. Get an unlimited or high-limit data pack.

Scene Management

OBS lets you create multiple "scenes" - pre-configured layouts you switch between:
