Every auction has one team owner who spends Rs 25,000 on two star players in the first three minutes. By the end of the auction, they are scrambling to fill their last four slots with base-price picks, ending up with a squad that is top-heavy and unbalanced. They lose in the semifinals because their number 6 and 7 batsmen cannot hold a bat.

And then there is the team owner who picks up solid players at Rs 3,000–5,000 each, spreads their purse evenly, and builds a squad where everyone contributes. They win the tournament. Nobody remembers their auction because there were no dramatic bids — but everyone remembers their trophy.

Here are the strategies that build winning squads.

Strategy 1: Core Three, Fill the Rest

The most balanced approach. Identify the three roles that matter most for your format:

For box cricket (6-a-side): an explosive opener, a death-overs bowler, and a spin all-rounder. These three win matches. Spend 50% of your purse on them. Fill the remaining 3–5 slots with solid, affordable players.

For tennis ball cricket (8–11-a-side): a reliable opening pair, a strike bowler, and one genuine all-rounder. Spend 40% on these four. The rest of the squad should be competent players who will not lose you the match even if they do not win it.

The core three approach works because cricket is a game of match-winners. One player scoring 50 in a final is worth more than five players scoring 10 each.

Strategy 2: The Budget Spread

Opposite of the star-player approach. Spend no more than 15% of your purse on any single player. With Rs 1,00,000 purse, that means no player costs more than Rs 15,000.

This strategy builds depth. You might not have the auction's most expensive player, but you have 11 players who can all bat, bowl, and field. In a tournament where injuries, unavailability, and bad form are realities, depth wins over star power.

The budget spread is especially effective in longer tournaments (4+ match days) where squad rotation and player availability become factors.

Strategy 3: The Market Maker

An advanced strategy that exploits auction dynamics rather than player quality. Here is how it works:

Bid aggressively on players you do not necessarily want in the early rounds. Push the price up by Rs 3,000–5,000, then drop out. The winning team overpays, reducing their purse for later rounds.
In later rounds, when rival teams have limited budgets, pick up undervalued players at near-base price. The competition cannot outbid you because they already spent their money.

This is risky — if you accidentally win a player you inflated, you are stuck with the overpay. But when executed well, it gives you a budget advantage in the back half of the auction.

Strategy 4: Role-First, Name-Second

Before the auction, list the roles you need to fill, not the players you want to buy. For an 11-a-side squad:

2 openers (at least one aggressive)
2 middle-order batsmen
1 wicket-keeper (who can bat)
2 fast/medium bowlers
2 spin bowlers
2 all-rounders

During the auction, fill each role with the best available player within your budget. If the top opener goes for Rs 15,000 and your limit is Rs 10,000, let them go and pick the second-best opener for Rs 6,000. The Rs 9,000 saved fills two more roles.

The role-first approach prevents emotional bidding. You are not fighting for a name; you are filling a position.

Strategy 5: The Patient Closer

Most auction drama happens in the first hour. Team owners are aggressive, bids escalate quickly, and marquee players go for high prices. In the second half of the auction, urgency sets in — teams need specific roles filled, budgets are tighter, and players are cheaper.

The patient closer spends conservatively in the first half, picking up good-value players when bidding is not intense. They enter the second half with more budget than anyone else. When other teams cannot afford to compete, the patient closer fills their squad with strong players at discounted prices.

The risk: good players might be gone by the time you start spending. Mitigate this by picking up 2–3 key players early (at reasonable prices) and being patient for the rest.

Pre-Auction Homework

The best strategies start before auction day:

Study the player pool. Know every player's strengths, weaknesses, and likely base price. Group them into "must have," "good to have," and "filler."
Identify 3–4 undervalued players that other teams might overlook. The spinner who does not look like a spinner but takes 3 wickets every match. The lower-order batter who has a strike rate of 180 but nobody remembers because he bats at number 7.
Know your competitors. Which teams will bid aggressively for batters? Which will prioritise bowlers? Position yourself to avoid bidding wars where possible.
Set a maximum price for each target player before the auction. Write it down. Stick to it. The adrenaline of a bidding war makes you overspend — pre-set limits prevent that.

The Unsold Round: Where Legends Are Born

Players who go unsold in the first pass return at reduced prices. These are often the best value picks in the entire auction. A Category B player who went unsold at Rs 3,000 returns at Rs 1,500 — half the price for the same player.

Why do good players go unsold? Bad timing (they were presented when all teams were full on that role), high base price (the market disagreed with their valuation), or simply being unknown (new players without a reputation).

Smart team owners save Rs 5,000–10,000 of their purse specifically for the unsold round. It is the auction equivalent of a clearance sale — same merchandise, better prices.

After the Auction

Review your squad honestly. Did you fill all eleven roles? Do you have cover for your key positions (a backup opener, a second spinner)? Is your batting order clear? Who captains?

The auction gives you a squad. The tournament is won by how you use it. Many an expensive squad has been beaten by a cheaper, better-organized team with a clear plan.
