Pickleball Player Auction: Build Balanced League Teams

Club pickleball leagues usually start with friends forming teams, and end with one team of the club's best players winning every week. An auction or a draft fixes that by spreading skill across teams before the first match. Pickleball adds its own wrinkles: most matches are doubles, skill gaps are large, and mixed doubles needs a balance of players.
Auction or draft?
Auction – captains bid from a fixed purse. It feels like an event, with energy and banter, and balances well if purses and caps are set carefully. Best for 6 or more teams and a launch night.
Snake draft – captains pick in turn, and the order reverses each round. Quick, simple and balanced by design. Best for small clubs and short seasons.
1. Rate every player first
Balance depends on knowing who is strong. Use a published rating such as DUPR where players have one, or run a short assessment session and grade players into bands (for example 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+). Put the bands on the auction screen so captains bid on facts, not reputation.
2. Set the rules that matter for doubles
Squad shape: for a team league with men's, women's and mixed doubles, set a minimum number of players of each gender per squad.
Rating cap: limit the combined rating of a team's top four players, so a captain can't buy every 4.0.
Pairs or individuals: auction individuals for the most balance; auction fixed pairs only if partners refuse to split.
3. Run it on one shared board
Show each player's band, the current bid and every captain's remaining purse. Sell the highest band first, then work down. ZPLYS Player Auction handles live bidding and tracks every team's budget, and ZPLYS tournament software is integrated with DUPR for player ratings.
4. Fix the league format
A common team format is a fixed set of games per tie, such as two men's doubles, two women's doubles and one mixed, each to 11 points. Publish the fixture list straight after the auction.
Frequently asked questions
What is a fair purse for a pickleball auction?
Enough for every team to buy its minimum squad at base price, plus roughly 40% to compete for top players.
Should captains be the strongest players?
No. Strong captains plus open bidding tends to stack teams; pick captains from the middle bands.
How many players does a pickleball team need?
For a five-game tie with mixed doubles, 6 to 8 players allows rest and substitutes.
