How to Run a Pickleball Tournament: Formats & Checklist

Pickleball tournaments fill fast because the sport is social and quick to learn, but they also overrun fast: many short matches across several courts. The organisers who finish on time plan their brackets, courts and match length before entries open.
1. Choose your events and brackets
Offer the events players expect: men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles, with singles optional. Split each event by skill level (for example 3.0, 3.5, 4.0+) and, if you have the numbers, by age (open and 50+). A bracket with fewer than 4 teams is not worth running; merge it with the next level.
2. Pick a format for each bracket
Round robin – everyone plays everyone. Use for 4 to 6 teams per bracket.
Pools, then knockout – 2 to 3 guaranteed pool matches. Use for 8 to 24 teams.
Double elimination – 2 guaranteed matches. Use for competitive brackets with more court time.
Single elimination – 1 guaranteed match. Use for very large draws on a tight schedule.
Pools followed by a knockout is the usual choice: every team gets several matches, and the event still ends with a clear final.
3. Do the court maths
A doubles game to 11 takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Multiply your total matches by 20 minutes and divide by your courts to get your real playing time, then add 20% for warm-ups and delays. If the number is too long, shorten pool games or cut a bracket, not the breaks.
4. Write the rules and scoring
State the scoring before entries open: games to 11 (win by 2) for pools, and best of three for semis and finals is common. Say which rulebook you follow, the ball model, and what happens if a team is late.
5. Take entries and payments online
Collect both partners' names, ratings and the event entered, and take the fee at sign-up. Use ratings to seed the draw so top teams meet late. ZPLYS Tournament Management takes registrations online, generates knockout, round-robin and group-stage draws, and is integrated with DUPR.
6. Run match day from one schedule
Assign courts as matches finish, call the next match before courts free up, and post live scores so players know when they are on. ZPLYS shows a live schedule, live scores and live standings, with in-app notifications for players.
