Cricket Auction Software — What Organizers Actually Need


You have decided to run a player auction for your cricket tournament. Now you need software to manage it. A Google search gives you generic auction platforms (built for art auctions and charity events), a few cricket-scoring apps that bolted on auction features as an afterthought, and one or two purpose-built platforms.
The wrong choice becomes apparent 15 minutes into the live auction when the software cannot handle the one thing you need it to do. Here is how to choose correctly.
The Five Must-Have Features
1. Real-Time Purse Calculation
This is the single most important feature. When Team A bids Rs 8,000 on a player, the system must instantly calculate: can Team A afford this bid? After this purchase, can they still fill remaining squad slots at minimum base prices?
If the software does not enforce this, you will have a team that bids Rs 40,000 on one player in a Rs 50,000 purse and then cannot afford 10 more squad members. The auctioneer has to pause, do manual math, and potentially reverse a sale. It destroys the flow.
2. Squad Composition Tracking
Most tournaments have squad rules: minimum 2 bowlers, maximum 4 overseas players (for international-mix leagues), mandatory wicket-keeper. The software should track each team's composition in real time and prevent illegal purchases.
3. Player Pool Management
The ability to organise players into sets (ordered groups), assign base prices, mark players as sold/unsold, and bring unsold players back for a recovery round. The flow of the auction depends on this — random player ordering creates a chaotic, unpredictable event.
4. Live Display/Overlay
The software must generate a visual display showing the current player (name, role, stats, photo, base price), current highest bid and team, countdown timer, and all teams' purse balances and squad status.
This display is either projected in the room or used as an OBS overlay for live streaming. Without it, the auction is just people shouting numbers in a room.
5. Post-Auction Exports
After the auction: squad sheets per team (PDF or image), complete bid history (CSV), player allocation summary, and a shareable results page. If the software does not export clean data, you will spend 2 hours after the auction manually creating squad lists for WhatsApp groups.
Features That Separate Good From Great
Countdown Timer with Auto-Close
When a bid is placed, the timer resets (to 15–30 seconds). If no new bid arrives before the timer expires, bidding closes automatically. This prevents the auctioneer from having to judge "is bidding done?" — the timer decides objectively.
WhatsApp Integration
Automatic message to a player when they are sold: "Congratulations! You have been picked by Team Warriors for Rs 6,000. Contact your captain: [Name, Phone]." This saves 30 minutes of post-auction communication.
Multi-Sport Support
If you organise auctions across sports (cricket today, football next month), the platform should support different squad rules, roles, and formats without requiring a new account or setup.
Spectator View
A public URL where anyone — players not at the venue, family members, fans — can follow the auction in real time. This is different from the admin/auctioneer view; it shows only public information (bids, sales, squads) without controls.

Evaluation Checklist
Before committing to a platform, test these scenarios:
Create 8 teams with Rs 1,00,000 purse each and 100 players in 4 sets. Generate the auction. How long did setup take?
Simulate a bidding war — 4 teams bidding on the same player. Does the system handle rapid bids smoothly? Does the timer reset correctly?
Try to make a team overbid (spend more than they can afford given remaining squad needs). Does the system prevent it?
Sell 60 players, then check the live display. Is every team's purse, squad count, and composition correct?
Export the results. Do you get clean squad sheets per team?
If all five scenarios pass, the platform is ready for a live event. If any fail, you will discover the failure during the auction — in front of 100 people.
The Cost-Value Equation
Free platforms exist but typically lack the critical features (overlay, purse enforcement, exports). Paid platforms range from Rs 500–5,000 per event.
The cost of NOT using proper software: 2–3 hours of extra manual work, 1–2 purse calculation errors (each requiring a 10-minute pause to resolve), no live overlay (reducing the professional feel), and no automated communication (30+ minutes of post-auction WhatsApp messaging).
For an event that 100+ people will participate in and remember, the cost of good software is the best Rs 2,000 you will spend.
